Yes, as far as I know, foreigners are given citizenship if they sign a contract with the Russian army. I even have an advertisement on a billboard near my house saying "Sign a contract... there is also an opportunity to obtain citizenship."  
But do you need this Russian roulette? You can just live in Russia for 5 years and then ask for citizenship. During these 5 years, you will definitely understand whether you like this country or not.

You're thinking of the French Foreign Legion, it's famous because it's an unusual policy to encourage noncitizens to join a countrys military, this is not something that's a standard procedure for all/most militaries.

This is not some backwater conflict against unwashed peasants with rusty ak-47. You will be up against modern equipped military with NATO mercenaries. Its up to you to assess the risk

The Kremlin likes posturing about foreign volunteers in propaganda every so often, but they don't  actually have a progressive policy whatsoever in regards to this sort of thing.

Especially since the ISIS terrorist attack things haven't been great for foreigners in the country.

I keep running into Indian folk online who are *very* pro-Russia, which I don't really understand. Here in the UK, Indians and Anglo-Indians are no fans of Putin and his ilk and they're ambivalent about the US at worst. 

Then you speak to 'Indian Indians' and they're all about Russia, as if someone in Moscow just offered a massive advance in rupees to talk up the regime. Despite the RF not giving the smallest shit about India at all.

Well there are three different notions here : 

1)Why is that only oil purchases are funding russian offensive because while we talk about Oil purchases by India and china, why do we leave out LNG purchases, LPG purchases and Pipeline Gas purchases. Where EU purchases are probably 50 multiple higher than Indian purchases.  

Also, when EU and US sanctioned Russian oil , they diverted their procurement from Russia to Middle east or West Asia. West Asia gas been traditional supplier of oil to India and China. When everyone turns to the same supplier for oil, it's natural that prices of Crude oil from Middle east would increase. Thus it was natural for India and China to look at other suppliers who provide you cheaper oil. 

2)Second, Although I personally and most people in India do not support Russian offensive or invasion of Ukraine. But the pro Russian sentiment within Indians is irrespective of Putin or Russian invasion of Ukraine. It's to do with Soviet Unions support to India during 1971 Bangladesh Genocide by Pakistan, and also the paranoia towards USA again because of sale of large offensive weapons to Pakistan sometimes on line of credit. 

But that said, that sentiment is changing over the years. Also today I would argue that India is more aligned with USA's Indo-pacific strategy than America's oldest NATO allies too.

3) Far more Indians went and joined Ukrainian military on front line against Russian invasion compared to very few Indians who went to join Russian military as logictic personals. 

Also, there are far more Germans, Pols , Serbians,  Hungarians , Spanish and even people from north America have joined pro russia forces than Indians. Source - Polish Institute of International Affairs. 

So, I guess this settles the debate,  it's important to look at the nuisances within the topic than focusing superficially on title of some articles.

If you read the article, it clearly says that those Indian guys were scammed (to their literal death) by opportunistic recruiters. These folks most likely were too impoverished to even care. They jumped at the first ship that was boarding.  

Y'all need to realize that for the majority of the Indian population global events happening 1000s of miles away are far far less important than domestic ones. Most Indians would struggle to even point out Ukraine on the map. 

Poverty can make people do terrible things. For a guy struggling to put bread on the table, an opportunity to work and earn in Russia ( A country that has an incredibly positive reputation locally, due to deep rooted historical &amp; cultural ties that can be attributed to West's diplomatic mishandling of India ) is a godsend.  

Hell it wouldn't even surprise me if they knew that they'll die, as long as their families got compensated. It is a different reality. One that I do not expect an average European to understand but I sure wish that y'all put some effort to at least get educated on the subject  before diving to your base instincts of falling to racism. Sad.
